ASUU Strike: ASUU Set To Embark On One Week Warning Strike

Nigerian University students are bittered as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, embarks on a warning strike tomorrow over Federal Government’s failure to implement the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, of 2013 and the 2009 Agreement.

ASUU chapters all over the nation are having chapter meetings today to solidify the resolution for strike.

The National president of the union, Mr. Biodun Ogunyemi made available the news during a press conference held at the University of Abuja on Moday, 14th Nov., 2016, that the union is ready to embark on one week warning strike.

The union members are agrieved over the non-chalant attitude that the Federal Government pay to University education in Nigeria.

Mr. Ogunyemi told the press conference that in the nationwide meeting held by ASUU National Executive Council, NEC, this issues were raised and the council concluded that it will embark on a one week nationwide warning strike to drive home their grievances.

He added that the agreements in the 2009 treaty are clear and understandable.

The inability of the Federal Government to pay full attention to this plight has put us the leaders of the union in tight corners, he said.

“We don’t know how to answer numerous questions raised by the union members over non-implementation of the MoU and  Agreement of 2009.”

The boss mentioned some of the agreements as; pension, TSA and University autonomy, funding of Universities for revitalisation, payments of staff entitlements since December 2015 and renegotiation of 2009 Agreement.

‘This issues are too many to be given less attention to as the Federal Government have done. Today we are telling them that there is every need to attend to this issue.”

‘If they can be able to listen to us, what is the need of the strike, he said. We will call it off and go back to the classroom.’

“It is one week warning strike which starts tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th Nov., 2016 till next week Wednesday.”

In another issue, the union was amazed at the slash of the allocation to education sector in the 2016 Budget by 3%.

With this issues at hand the Academic Staff Union of Universities call upon the education-loving Nigerians and the general public to join hands to bring FG to implementation table.

This will enable lectures, examination, meetings and other things to resume fully as soon as possible.
